Our students this semester in Software Engineering for Internet Applications have divided themselves into roughly three groups:

• One third has chosen to use Microsoft .NET, building pages in C#/ASP.NET connecting to SQL Server
• One third has chosen to use scripting languages such as PHP connecting to PostgreSQL and sometimes Oracle
• The final third, which seems to be struggling the most, is using Java Server Pages (JSP) with Oracle on Linux

After researching how to do bind variables in Java, which turns out to be much harder and more error-prone than in 20-year-old C interfaces to relational databases, I had an epiphany:  Java is the SUV of programming tools.

A project done in Java will cost 5 times as much, take twice as long, and be harder to maintain than a project done in a scripting language such as PHP or Perl.

Whenever I want to find out the latest cool gadget, gizmo or technology, I can always be sure of finding it over at Russell’s site.  And seeing how he’s mentioned his pageviews have shot up to 10k/day, I guess I’m not the only one Russell has a refreshing view on most things tech, and while I don’t agree with everything he says, nor am I crazy about mobile devices, he puts out some really funny stuff about being a foreigner in Spain, something all too familiar.

An artificial neural network is a model of the organic brain. It attempts to reproduce the interactions between the neurons in the brain during the learning and thinking process. It works by applying mathematical formulae obtained from medical studies of how the actual brain works.

There are several different types of ANNs. This implementation will model the feed-forward, multi-layer neural network. An ANN learns in the same way as the natural brain, that is, by reinforcing the connections between neurons. Several learning (or training) algorithms have been devised.

MozPHP is a Mozilla PHP integration package. With MozPHP you can execute PHP scripts in Mozilla directly without the need for a local HTTP server.

MozPHP may for example be useful for you if you want to create an application which is available online on the Web as well as on some offline distribution media like CD-ROM or DVD.
