Graham on Startups and Investors

Posted on 22 August 2007 by Demian Turner

A real jewel:

There was kind of a clash of cultures. First they came to check us out. They showed up wearing these Bill Cosby sweaters, lilke someone in corporate affairs has told them that when they go and visit startups, they’re supposed to not wear suits and they’re like, "Uh, what do we wear?" "Wear a sweater that looks like some macrame class knitted it collectively."

From "Founders at Work", a highly recommended read.

First Direct in the 21st Century

Posted on 19 August 2007 by Demian Turner

Every once in a while you get a response from a service provider that requires you to make a hitherto unprecedented leap of imagination. The following is in response to a request I made to my bank, First Direct, a subsidiary of HSBC, one of the largest banking operations on the planet, that it should be possible to review sent messages from their online banking app:

Re: Messages

Thank you for your message dated 26-Jul-2007 regarding saving your messages on internet banking.

Messages that you have sent or received via the internet banking service can be saved onto your computer for future reference.

To do this, you can highlight the contents of the message with the mouse and use ‘CTRL’ and ‘C’ to copy the message and then ‘CTRL’ and ‘V’ to paste the message into your word processing package. Alternatively, you can use ‘CTRL’ and ‘P’ to print out the message.

This information can also be found on the ‘help’ option from the top menu on our internet banking service.

If you need any information from previously sent or received messages we can re-send these.

Please let us know if you require anything further.

An error can also be here because the profile photo upload code is crazy

Posted on 13 August 2007 by Demian Turner

… from the comments in index.php of the recently leaked Facebook source code, an entertaining way to start off your week. What I find interesting is the first responses from the blogosphere are about whether Facebook’s security problems are PHP-related or programmer-related. D-uhhhhhh, look at the code chaps, even OScommerce or phpAdsNews source looks sophisticated compared to this.

I wonder what value the market places on whether a web app is designed in a non-amateur way or not? Of course Facebook is a hot property with its 40M+ user accounts and great usability, but now that it is common knowledge what kind of code is holding the thing together …

Does code quality really matter in the big picture?

Effortlessly Create a Demo for your Product

Posted on 22 May 2005 by Demian Turner

As usual, I have to thank the dudes that hang on seagull-general for this great suggestion, check out wink if you need a screen recorder to put together a demo of your software, or anything else for that matter.

Wink allows you to capture whatever is happening on your screen, and outputs it in a variety of formats, including swf.

Inspired by RoR’s slick intros, I thought it was time Seagull got a movie demo, here’s a first attempt though admittedlly it runs too fast – soon to be tweaked.

Cheers Miha Vrhovnik.
